Any Folder Can Be Its Own Vault

This one is a technique rather than a mistake, and it's the reason building this project in public is possible at all.

The problem

My notes live in Obsidian, in one vault of about eight hundred notes. Business plans, client work, half-finished ideas, personal things, the lot. It's a working brain, and like anyone's working brain, most of it isn't for sharing.

To build this project out loud, I need to show my notes. Not a curated screenshot — the actual working file, with the actual mess in it, because a sanitized version would defeat the point.

So how do you show one project's notes without showing all the rest?

The answer, which took thirty seconds

In Obsidian, a vault is just a folder. Any folder. You point the app at a different one and that folder is the vault — the whole app reframes around it.

So I opened the project folder as its own vault. Eighteen files, the day I counted. That's the entire visible world: sidebar, search, backlinks, graph view, everything. The rest are not hidden, or filtered, or collapsed. They are simply not in scope.

Nothing moved. Nothing was copied. There is no second version of anything to keep in sync, and no export step to forget. The files sit exactly where they always sat, in the same folder inside the same larger structure. I just changed which door I came in through.

Why this is a privacy control, not tidiness

I want to be precise about this, because it's the part that matters.

If I'd tried to solve this by being careful — remembering not to open the wrong note, keeping the sidebar collapsed, cropping the recording — I'd have been relying on my own attention, live, while also trying to explain what I'm building. That fails eventually. Not maybe: eventually.

This removes the possibility instead of managing it. The wrong note can't appear on screen because the wrong note isn't in the vault. Search can't surface it. A stray click can't reach it. The guarantee comes from the structure rather than my behaviour, and structural guarantees survive being tired.

That's a general principle worth more than the trick itself: when you catch yourself planning to be careful, look for the arrangement that makes carefulness unnecessary.

If you want to try it

Open Obsidian, choose to open a folder as a vault, and pick any project folder you already have. That's it. Your existing vault is untouched and still there. If the folder has no Obsidian configuration yet, it makes a small hidden one and changes nothing else.

It costs nothing to try and it's immediately reversible, which is a rare combination.
